STATEMENT ON THE FILM
"HUNTING MATTHEW NICHOLS"
On behalf of the elected city council members of Port Rupert, we feel compelled to address the recent release and upcoming screenings of the film Hunting Matthew Nichols. This film, presented as a documentary, focuses on the tragic disappearance of teenagers Matthew Nichols and Jordan Reimer in 2001— a heartbreaking event that continues to affect their families and loved ones profoundly. While we extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted, we must express our strong disapproval and non-endorsement of this film.
The City of Port Rupert firmly believes that Hunting Matthew Nichols portrays our community inaccurately. The film sensationalizes a tragedy, exploits the grief of those involved, and unfairly casts our city in a negative light.
Artistic freedom is important, but when addressing a story as sensitive as this, a balanced and truthful approach is essential. This film fails to meet that standard. Instead, it sensationalizes the events to the point of purposely scaring audiences for entertainment value. The fact that this film has been showcased at festivals like “Nightmares” speaks volumes about the angle the filmmakers have chosen and their disregard for the truth, opting instead to exploit fear and tragedy for dramatic effect.
Therefore, we formally request that Hunting Matthew Nichols be removed from the festival lineup at the Whistler Film Festival. We will explore all available options going forward to ensure Port Rupert is fairly represented and this film. We urge the broader public to exercise caution and discernment when considering this film.
Thank you for supporting the truth and integrity of Port Rupert. Together, we can preserve the dignity of our community and stand against unjust portrayals.
Sincerely, The Port Rupert City Council
